uniqui’s taste profile

What do I listen to?

Why do I listen to it? how do i find music?

Where did my taste come from?

From boombox to walkman, then iPod mini to a laptop with storage and streaming, I was never without music growing up.

I was fortunate to grow up around parents who liked listening to music and had something playing over the sound system most days. I was always encouraged to sing and dance and often gifted music for my birthday. By age 12, my CD binder was filled with U2, Shania Twain, Cold Play, Britney, John Mayer, Black Eyed Peas and many more.

As we know, technology advanced and eventually I was the proud owner of an ipod mini. Game over. It was compact and had a screen and a wheel to parse through my soon to be brimming library! I had to fill up this device immediately with the best and newest tracks.

I hopped on iTunes and my first purchase was Fergie’s “London Bridge” (Explicit), which my mom did not appreciate, but I got back in her good graces with the likes of Corrine Bailey Rae, The Script, and Norah Jones. As my collection grew, so did my hunger for finding new music.

I began playlisting on sites like 8tracks (RIP) and eventually stumbled upon the holy grail of sonic underground: SoundCloud. The vibrations of J Dilla, Mr. Carmack, and Tom Misch teleported me into the beatmaking world and became my gateway to the electronic music world. This opened up avenues of appreciation for DnB, Dubstep, and House.

<<Admittedly, I found music from some sites that weren’t kosher, but it nonetheless opened up my ears further to the crazy sounds that electronic music can create and since then, I proudly purchase from and support my fave artists.>>

My top place to find music was listening to artist mixes and radio shows. I always looked forward to new Soulection radio drops with Joe Kay, LeMarquis, FKJ, ODESZA, and Disclosure. Head to my playlist “Zest tapes n Sets” to find my most loved mixes from the past 10 years.

Through the expansion of subgenres and genre-blending, I find myself constantly in awe of how groovy music can be. Ultimately if it makes my body move, I like it. If it makes me feel something, I double like it. The pocket I get down to most at present would be Soulful House, Nu Disco, UKG, and anything with a fat bass that makes me go ( ✿˃̣̣̥᷄⌓˂̣̣̥᷅ ) . I regularly create and add to existing playlists grouped by genre on my SoundCloud, so follow along and let’s discover the infinitely expanding library of tracks.
